SPYROS RANIS (1928-2022)

Spyros Ranis was a man whose life was deeply tied to the sea and entrepreneurship. Born in Athens to Zakynthian parents, he worked from an early age to support his family. His true passion, however, was seafaring. In 1947 he joined the Hydra Merchant Marine Academy and soon found himself sailing across the world before continuing his career in the Coast Guard, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 1970 he chose to follow his own vision.

He founded RANGER MARINE SA, a company that established him in global shipping, and later turned to tourism, creating the ASTIR ODYSSEUS hotel in Kos.

Beyond business, Ranis remained devoted to Greek maritime tradition. He believed strongly that Greek officers should play a leading role on Greek ships, and to that end, he founded the Piraeus Center of Maritime Education in his name, supporting future generations of sailors.

He passed away at 93, remembered as a man who worked, dreamed, and contributed to Greek shipping and his country.
